Infrastructure in carriageway and private land for conveyance of generated electricity by tidal energy to National Grid point on terra firma. Construct landfall and new grid substations.
YEAR 2026
CLIENT Morlais Menter Mon Ltd
Morlais is a Menter Môn tidal energy scheme which aims to benefit local communities, the economy and help tackle climate change by using renewable energy to generate clean low carbon electricity. The Morlais scheme manages a 35 km2 area of seabed off the coast of Holy Island, Anglesey and has the potential to generate 240MW of electricity and to put Ynys Môn on the map in terms of tidal Stream Energy.
The onshore scope of the work was to construct a landfall substation on the coast near South Stack, underground cabling installation from the coast to Holyhead and a new grid substation at Holyhead. Offshore work includes underground ducting installation from landfall beneath the seabed to allow developers of tidal energy converters to deploy their devices.
An experienced site supervisor was required to oversee construction of the onshore and offshore works for the Morlais scheme under the ECC NEC3 contract. The successful candidate, CADARN has a proven track record of overseeing large construction projects on behalf of clients which involved interfaces between different contractors and personnel. Having past experience of similar works was an advantage. The following were essential to the role:
Menter Môn invited Tenders from suitably qualified providers for the provision of NEC3 Site Supervisor services for the Morlais Project.
Morlais is a tidal power renewable energy demonstration scheme off Holy Island, Anglesey being developed by Menter Môn and its subsidiary company Menter Môn Morlais Limited, a not-for-profit social enterprise company in Wales.
Menter Môn were awarded a 45-year lease by The Crown Estate for the management and development of the West Anglesey Demonstration Zone in 2014 and have subsequently secured a Marine Licence for the zone to develop the tidal stream energy industry, planning for onshore infrastructure to export energy generated from the zone and secured funding for the infrastructure, which follows the Morlais Consent and Development.
The site supervisor was responsible for reporting to the Project Manager on programme, safety and quality issues as well as maintaining relationships with stake holders including local landowners and tenants.
The role was largely in the field but required an element of office presence to report on progress and mitigation of arising issues. As a demonstration project, a range of tidal developers will be allocated berths within the Morlais Development Zone (MDZ) to deploy their devices.
